Bio

Tom Gallagher has been an antiwar activist since the Vietnam War.  He authored San Francisco’s Proposition U in 2008 which declared it city policy that its “elected representatives in the United States Senate and House of Representatives should vote against any further funding for the deployment of United States Armed Forces in Iraq.”

A native of the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, NY, he represented the Allston Brighton section of Boston in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.  He currently lives in the Bernal Heights neighborhood in San Francisco where he serves as president of the local Democratic Club.

He was the principal San Francisco surrogate speaker for the 2004 Dennis Kucinich presidential campaign, and its principal Bay Area speaker in 2008.  He has authored five antiwar resolutions regarding the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars that the San Franciso Democratic Party has adopted, in the face of opposition from the city’s senior Democratic Representative.   He is also active in the Progressive Democrats of America.

He has served as an United Nations Election Officer in the 1999 plebiscite in East Timor, as a voter registration and election supervisor in Bosnia, and as an election observer in Macedonia, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine.

A member of the United Educators of San Francisco, AFL-CIO, he has written articles and reviews for the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Boston Phoenix, Common Dreams, Dissent, East Bay Express, In These Times, Berkshire Eagle, Boston Business Journal, Demockracy.com, LA Weekly, Moscow Times, The National Pastime, San Francisco Bay Guardian, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Independent, Socialist Review, Social Policy, Urban Ecology, Z Magazine, et al.
